Looking for a meaningful, hands-on way to serve our local community? Join AOA and the Lifestyle Medicine Student Interest Group as we collaborate each month to serve as Guest Chefs at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH).

Together, we’ll prepare a well-balanced dinner that is rooted in lifestyle medicine principles, share simple health education tips, and engage with families whose loved ones are hospitalized. Each dinner serves 30-50 individuals and is prepared on-site in the RMH kitchen.

Volunteer Expectations:

- Arrive at 4:00 PM to help cook the meal from scratch 

- Engage with families during dinner by sharing brief, evidence-based tips on nutrition, wellness, and chronic disease prevention (Dinner is self-served starting at 6:00 PM)

- Stay through clean-up, helping ensure the kitchen is left clean and welcoming (Event ends by 7:30 PM)

Austin (or another AOA student leader) will send a confirmation email or text a few days before each dinner to confirm your participation and assign specific roles as needed.

This is an approved IPM service-learning opportunity and is open to all medical students, regardless of AOA membership. Join us to practice community-based service, apply our lifestyle medicine training in a real-world setting, and support families during a challenging time with warm meals and compassionate connection!

Dr. Hood's expectations

1. Arrive on time,  business casual with badge (white coat is optional), and ready to learn! 

2. These are real patients, not SPs. Be mentally prepared for any potential negative attitudes or comments from patients. If an uncomfortable feeling arises, excuse yourself, leave the room, and inform Dr. Hood. 

3. You represent USCSOMG and Prisma Health. It is essential to speak and act professionally. 

4. No time limit in the room, however patient’s seem to get restless after >10 minutes of counseling. Read the room and the patient’s comfort level.

We are joining the Mauldin Miracle League at Sunset Park to help facilitate baseball games for our Greenville IDD athletes - around 6 total teams on each of those Saturdays we volunteer. Each game will last approximately an hour, so the current timestamp for this event will be from 8:30 am-12 pm with some flexibility. There is a short orientation at 8:30 am to go over guidelines and who MML is, with baseball play from 9 am-12 pm. You will most likely be paired with a player from one of the teams playing during the hour (some groups might have 2 buddies to 1 member or 1 to 2, etc.) and you will help them hit off the tee, run the bases, field the ball, throw the ball, the whole 9 yards so make the most out of it! 

Again, please make sure you RSVP to each event you will be attending so we can track your hours. You do not need to fill out anything else other than this RSVP on CC, and then show up ready to have some fun with your matched friends!

We have a great opportunity for students to gain valuable knowledge about treating patients in the IDD community. This opportunity is to outline the process of matching in a one-on-one friendship.

If you have already filled out a membership application, you do not need to fill out another form. We will work as a class to craft hand written letters to Seniors living alone or Seniors entering rehabilitation or long term care. These letters will serve as a means of connection to combat social isolation in the Upstate, and our partners include Meals on Wheels and The Woodlands at Furman University.

Alternatively, letters can be written to the SC State Legislature to advocate for the needs of Seniors in our state. This will be done after researching the specific needs as expressed by the  SC Dept. on Aging.

Volunteering at the Taylors Free Medical Clinic

Walk with a Future Doc is a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. You’ll take a few minutes to learn about a current health topic from a healthcare provider and medical student, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a healthy walk and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out, get active, and enjoy all the benefits that come from walking. Every 3rd Saturday of every month!

This is a new program so we may do a bit of trial and error this year! At minimum you’ll be signing up to be available via email to a Woodmont High school student who is interested in health care (most of these students will be part of their school’s Health Care Club, so they have shown interest in health care as a profession). Your job will be to answer their questions about medical school, including details of your own personal journey, and to provide advice about potential activities, whether volunteer, extracurricular, shadowing, etc. that are appropriate for this stage of their journey into medicine, as well as advice for activities to participate in during their college years that would be beneficial to someone who eventually wants to apply to medical school. There may also be opportunities to be a part of Q&A panels (virtual or in-person), present a lecture on a healthcare topic, demonstrate basic EMT skills, and provide campus tours. Our goal is to foster interest and excitement amongst these students. Woodmont is in one of the more rural areas of Greenville County and has previously not sent many students on to be doctors. We’d love to encourage these students to dream about the possibility of becoming MDs, and hopefully some future USCSOMG grads!

Get involved with Loaves and Fishes, a local agency helping to reduce hunger in our community. 

Rescue Route Volunteers rescue food that would otherwise be wasted by picking it up from a designated donor site and delivering it to one of Loaves & Fishes’ 105+ partner agencies. Rescue routes take approximately 1 – 1.5 hours to complete

Requirements to be a rescue route driver include: a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance, and attend an orientation. Upon taking a route, volunteers are required to report donation poundage information through our online reporting system.
