Volunteer: Roger C. Peace - Adaptive Bike Ride Volunteering

Join the Roger C. Peace Adaptive Sports and Wellness Center on their weekly UCAN bike ride! Accompany adaptive bike riders as they embark on the trail, keep them company during the ride, and create new connections in the Greenville community. You will be paired 1-on-1 with an adaptive athlete and will ride alongside them on a standard bicycle (bring your own if you have one). There are varying skill levels and you will be paired with a rider based on your desired ride time/distance. The recreational therapists will ensure you know everything you need to know about the bikes and your paired rider before you begin.

After responding to this opportunity on Campus Connect, download and create an account on the MindBody app so the staff knows to expect you there. Search for the Roger C. Peace Adaptive Sports and Wellness Center and sign up for the Volunteer - UCAN Cycling slot you want to attend. If it is your first time volunteering with them, email Conner (conner.magar@prismahealth.org) or Grace (elisabeth.nance@prismahealth.org) at least 5 days prior to receive training instructions.

This opportunity recurs every Monday from 1-2:30pm from October-March at 157 Welborn Street Suite B101, Greenville, SC 29601 (inside The Commons at Unity Park). Starting in April, the rides will move to every other Thursday evening. These rides are service learning approved for IPM!

If you have any questions or need help with the MindBody app, feel free to email Lauren (palmaril@email.sc.edu) with any questions or concerns. Thanks for signing up, and have fun!

Thank you for your willingness to help with KIND! We couldn’t provide this important education without your support.

KIND of the Upstate is a nonprofit located in Greenville, SC. KIND stands for Kids Including and Nurturing Disabilities. KIND hosts "KIND Days" during which we teach students about kindness, inclusion and disabilities. We read a book together as a class, discuss disabilities, recite and sign a kindness pledge, and participate in a writing or drawing activity. We hope you can join us for a wonderful morning session with students.

When signing up, you may choose to serve as either a Leader or a Helper in the classroom.

Leaders will guide the class through the provided lesson plan.

Whether you are a first time volunteer or a returning one, anyone can be a leader! Join our brief Zoom session to learn everything you need to feel confident stepping into the role. Participation is encouraged but not required. It is also a good chance for potential volunteers to learn more about a KIND Day run. There is no requirement to become a leader if you attend this zoom informational session. For more information, contact: KindDay@kindoftheupstate.org

Helpers will assist the Leader in carrying out the activities and supporting the students.

If you would like to request a specific teacher’s classroom, please include that in the comment box when you sign up. While we do our best to honor requests, we cannot guarantee placement in a particular classroom.

As KIND Day approaches, you will receive an email with all the details you’ll need about helping in the classroom.

We are continuously adding schools and dates, so check back regularly.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Rebecca Huntington at KindDay@kindoftheupstate.org.

Reminder:  Complete the IDD in Healthcare course on our main page to be able to receive service learning credit for this event, respond to this event on Campus Connect, as well as sign up through the link above! Thank you all for helping Best Buddies support our fellow community organizations!

Volunteer: Woodmont High School Mentorship

This is a new program so we may do a bit of trial and error this year! At minimum you’ll be signing up to be available via email to a Woodmont High school student who is interested in health care (most of these students will be part of their school’s Health Care Club, so they have shown interest in health care as a profession). Your job will be to answer their questions about medical school, including details of your own personal journey, and to provide advice about potential activities, whether volunteer, extracurricular, shadowing, etc. that are appropriate for this stage of their journey into medicine, as well as advice for activities to participate in during their college years that would be beneficial to someone who eventually wants to apply to medical school. There may also be opportunities to be a part of Q&A panels (virtual or in-person), present a lecture on a healthcare topic, demonstrate basic EMT skills, and provide campus tours. Our goal is to foster interest and excitement amongst these students. Woodmont is in one of the more rural areas of Greenville County and has previously not sent many students on to be doctors. We’d love to encourage these students to dream about the possibility of becoming MDs, and hopefully some future USCSOMG grads!

Sign up here: https://forms.gle/XUCcXPLegmvE8XR67

If you have any questions, please contact Morgan Edwards at MEE2@email.sc.edu!

Volunteer: Tutoring at Tanglewood Middle School

I teach the AVID class at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville. This is a new curriculum which encourages our students toward higher education after high school graduation. We're searching for college students willing to help guide our students during weekly structured tutoring sessions. This will develop agency in our students as they see real world examples of college readiness from yourselves.   We're able to take students from any degree path, organization, or background. The big requirement is they obviously need to pass the district mandated background check. The commitment level would be every Thursday of the month at maximum. We can work with students who can't make every week of the month as long as we can coordinate a consistent schedule, such as the first 2 Thursdays of every month. Consistency is preferred over making every week one month & none the next.    If interested, contact

Kyle Popores
