Volunteer: LiteracyRx: Virtual DIETICIAN Shadowing-Eat the Rainbow

Students will have the opportunity to shadow a registered dietician, Annie Anderson, MS, RD, CSOWM, LD in order to observe how she builds report with patients and their families. Annie will demonstrate how various nutritional and lifestyle topics can be communicated to clients from all backgrounds and how to engage them as partners in their care. Please remember, you are a representative of USCSOMG and need to conduct yourself with professionalism at all times. We will provide a virtual link for you to attend Annie‘s sessions/classes with her clients (as long as her clients are okay with that) .Please follow all of Annie’s directives in terms of how/when you communicate with the patient. She has asked that you ensure to mute yourself when joining phone/zoom/teams meetings.

Students will have the opportunity to shadow a pediatrician, Dr. Liz Chea in order to observe how she builds report with patients and their families. Dr. Chea will demonstrate how various health literacy topics can be communicated to children of all ages and how their families play a role in their care partnership. Please remember, you are a representative of USCSOMG and need to conduct yourself with professionalism at all times. Please wear business casual clothing and follow all of Dr. Chea’s directives in terms of how/when you communicate with the patient.

Counsel Dr. Hood's patients on a variety of health literacy topics, including medication management, preventive care, understanding medical instructions, and navigating healthcare resources, just to name a few.

2. These are real patients, not SPs. Be mentally prepared for any potential negative attitudes or comments from patients. If an uncomfortable feeling arises, excuse yourself, leave the room, and inform Dr. Hood. 

3. You represent USCSOMG and Prisma Health. It is essential to speak and act professionally. 

4. No time limit in the room, however patient’s seem to get restless after >10 minutes of counseling. Read the room and the patient’s comfort level.
